Mauritius Education System: Get Quality Education For Your Children

Category All about Mauritius

When thinking of Mauritius, what comes first into peoples' minds is the timeless setting, idyllic beaches, year-round warm weather and exclusive real estate projects. However, there's much more to Mauritius for foreigners choosing to settle on the island. Moving with a family automatically comes with its load of apprehensions and questions as you want the best of both worlds for your loved ones. When it comes to the educational sector, Mauritius strives to provide quality education to both local and international students, thus providing you with fruitful investment opportunities for the future of your children. Considering moving to Mauritius with your children soon? Here's what you need to know about the Mauritian education system.

Choose the right institution

Largely based on the British educational system, Mauritius offers both public and private educational institutions that are divided into four sectors - pre-primary schools, primary schools, secondary schools and tertiary institutions, where they study all the necessary subjects meeting with international standards. As public institutions are mostly under the management of the Mauritian government, the courses are generally held in English and school uniform is mandatory for all students. Depending on your children's age, you can choose the suitable sector to kick off their journey:

Pre-primary schools: Children entering pre-primary schools are generally aged 3 to 5 years old and are taught early education for the development of their social, personal and emotional abilities.

Primary schools: During 6-year of schooling divided in lower primary and upper primary, students study core subjects in order to obtain the Primary Education Certificate.

Secondary Schools: Secondary education also lasts for 6 years where students study all the necessary core subjects in order to reach their O-Level School Certificate and A-Level Higher School Certificate.

Tertiary Sector: Students entering the tertiary sector are generally aged 18 years old or more. There, they will be able to choose the field(s) in which they wish to specialise in order to obtain a Bachelor's Degree, a Master's Degree or any other Degrees. Mauritius provides tertiary institutions with a wide range of subjects from Engineering to Communication and more, opening the doors to many career opportunities.

Public or private schools are spread all across the island such as Le Bocage International School in Moka, Black River Government School, Royal College in Port Louis, Queen Elizabeth College in Rose Hill, and many more.

French-focused institutions

Mauritius also welcomes a network of high-level French educational institutions for international students having French as their mother tongue such as the Lycée La Bourdonnais in Curepipe, the Pierre Poivre College in Moka, the Paul et Virginie at Tamarin and many more. French education establishments in Mauritius have everything settled so that your children integrate well into the system, with programs that suit the French System. Uniform is not mandatory in private institutions whether they being English or French Schools.
